Preserve natural resources
Producing consumer goods requires a huge quantity of natural resources (trees, water, animals, etc.), some of which are greatly threatened. Recycling produces the same goods with less energy while reducing the need to extract so many natural resources.

Reduce pressure on landfills
Every year, tons of materials that could be recycled are thrown in the garbage. This puts more pressure than is needed on landfills that are already filled up with waste.
Opening a new landfill gets more complex every year because of more stringent standards and the NIMBY effect. How would you react if it was announced that a new landfill site was to open near your home?
Garbage gets trucked further from populated areas, bringing higher costs, more energy waste and more pollution.

Reduce pollution
Many people think that once buried, waste cannot pollute the environment anymore.
In fact, even buried, waste pollutes not only the soil, but also most importantly the water we drink and the air we breathe.
Methane produced by landfills is a large contributor to Québec's greenhouse gas emissions.
